INSTRUCTIONS FOR COLLECTION OF A HAIR SAMPLE 

0.5g of hair is needed

(3 teaspoons full)

  1. Have the patient sit with head slightly forward. Place napkin or bib around neck to prevent cut hair from getting under collar.
  2. For patients with long hair part hair across the back of the head at the ears, have patient hold top part of hair away. USE THINNING SHEARS. Hold shears diagonally while cutting the lower area of hair. Cut 2 or 3 areas across the nape of the neck. Comb the hair out at the distal (long end) end so to keep it directional. Lay the long hair in one direction on a table keeping the new growth at one end. Cut off 1 to 2 inches of the newest growth to send to the lab, discard the rest of the hair.

 

For patients with short hair hold shears diagonally (this does not leave a cosmetic affect) at the baso-occipital region (nape of neck). Cut 2 or 3 areas across the nape of neck. Comb through hair, place it in sample envelope.

  1. When hair has been dyed or a recent permanent use pubic hair or wait 6 weeks to collect sample.
